DEHR to Care - 2018 - Homelessness
DEHR to Care is an annual event that promotes Diversity, Equity, and Human Rights. Classes are encouraged to sign up and create an artwork that shares a perspective on such topic.. The artworks are then displayed and sold at a gala event with the proceeds going to support people affected by the issue at hand.
This year the topic for the DEHR projects was homelessness. As a class we delved into the topic of homelessness and how it presents itself in both Lethbridge, and the world. We then began to create these "street art" inspired canvases using spray paint, acrylic paint, and magazine cut outs. Students individually researched homelessness by engaging with some selected resources. Students then responded to this information by writing blog posts about what homelessness means to them. The enlightening words and phrases that students collected were used as the words on the canvas. The silhouettes on these canvases were traced from photos of each individual in our class, this was meant to represent how people experiencing homelessness are individuals with unique stories, just like each individual in our class.
Our class was able to create a total of nine pieces to sell at the DEHR gala in March and raised around $400 dollars to support people experiencing homelessness!
Celebration Of Learning
Senator Buchanan has adopted a student lead version of parent teacher interviews. This celebration of learning is different from classroom to classroom. In our class, we set up various stations for each subject. At these stations students engaged in an activity with their parents that displayed some of the skills they had been refining throughout their studies. Students shared their writing progress, Science experiments, and read the literature that we had been relating to Social Studies and Science. Our DEHR projects were also displayed for parents to see before the event! |
